My Personal Practice
My first experience with yoga was a hot class I agreed to go to with a friend. Prior to my first class, I had heard of how great of a physical challenge it is and the many health benefits that come with just one class; I was more than excited to take on the challenge! My mind however, quickly changed once I was in the 110 degree room, dripping sweat, and struggling to touch my toes. The fact that there were older folks in their 50's or so, twisting into postures with ease definitely didn't help my ambition. After barely keeping conscious the class ended, the second I walked out and felt the cool breeze of room temperature air, I felt a major sense of accomplishment. It was so satisfying that I went again, and again, and again. After several classes, and finally being able to touch my toes, I found myself enjoying the heat. This was the point I started becoming aware of little physical differences in my body each time I practiced. Along with releasing physical tensions in class, I walked out most every time feeling relaxed yet energized. Yoga became my immediate source of stress relief; whether it be school, work, or social stress, attending a class helped me to calm down and reorganize my thoughts. The time I dedicate to yoga is time I put aside any worries or stresses and dedicate it to myself. I remember one class I walked into particularly stressed, and the instructor said something extremely relevant, "Find your peace in the eye of the storm". I always remind myself of that quote when life gets a little overwhelming. There's always havoc around us, sometimes more than others, but if you are able to retain your peace of mind, everything becomes less stressful and easier to navigate through. Practicing yoga has helped to influence a more positive outlook on my life by bringing me mental and physical clarity. No matter how old, young, fit or not you are, I strongly believe practicing yoga can bring anybody to a better state of well-being.
