Wait, what did you just tell me to do?...
Much of the terminology used during a yoga class consists of mixed uses of Sanskrit terms and their translations, something completely foreign to a beginner. It is of course not expected of a beginner to know all of the postures and various styles of yoga, but it would be a good idea to know what props to bring, learn a few basic terms and to try out a few different styles to determine which would best suit you. Classes are guided by the instructor using specific names for each posture (Ex: savasana, pigeon, child's pose, etc.). In order to better concentrate on one's practice it becomes increasingly more important to know posture names and formations (not having to look up every ten seconds is quite helpful). In addition, especially for those who want to practice with more of a spiritual intention, understanding the semantics of Sanskrit terminology can significantly deepen an individual's practice.
